AirDrop or WebDrop? Choose by Devices, Network and Storage
Choose a transfer method for Apple devices, Windows and iPhone, or Android and Mac. Compare the data path and practical limits before sending.

For nearby Apple devices that support AirDrop, start with the built-in sharing option. For a Windows PC and iPhone, or an Android phone and Mac, WebDrop offers a browser session across the platform boundary.
For a full photo library, repeated folder synchronization, or a backup, evaluate a dedicated sync or wired workflow. Neither a temporary browser room nor a one-off nearby share replaces a backup plan.
Connection requirements are different
Apple’s nearby AirDrop instructions require Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to be enabled and the devices to be within range. This does not mean they must join the same Wi-Fi router. Receiving settings and contact visibility can also affect whether the target appears.
WebDrop requires each device to reach the internet and open the same session link. It does not discover nearby devices. This can work across Wi-Fi and cellular connections, but an organization’s firewall or device policy can still block it.
Understand where the file travels
For the nearby AirDrop workflow described here, the transfer is between Apple devices. WebDrop instead receives an upload into server storage and serves a separate download to the recipient. This comparison does not cover every continuity feature Apple may offer.
WebDrop’s QR code is an access link, not a recipient identity check. Session access expires seven days after creation; automatic storage cleanup is a separate process. Closing a tab does not revoke the link. Do not treat HTTPS as a claim of end-to-end encryption.
Compare time and failure points without a speed claim
No controlled device benchmark is published with this guide. WebDrop transfer time includes the sender’s upload and the receiver’s download, so a slow upstream connection can dominate the result. Its application-level file limit is 500 MB, with possible additional network or hosting restrictions.
If AirDrop cannot see the receiver, inspect its receiving settings and wireless connection. If WebDrop joins but stalls on a file, inspect upload completion and try a smaller local file. If a downloaded copy already exists, check the destination app before repeating either transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is WebDrop an implementation of Apple AirDrop?
No. It is a separate browser-based transfer service. It does not add Apple’s AirDrop protocol to Windows or Android.
